Along with Android One smartphones, Google announced yesterday that it is bringing offline access to video sharing website YouTube as well as paid Play Newsstand content to India. Google Play Newsstand paid content access is now live and Android users in India can now go to Play Store on their Android devices or Google Play website to subscribe to news sources.
Play Newsstand is a news reader from Google, which allows users to read content from various free and paid sources. Until now, only free content has been available to users in India but from now on, the consumers in the country will be able to buy or subscribe to paid Newsstand content.
The service will include 30 publications consisting of leading newspapers and magazines. The publications include Indiatimes, Zigwheels, Luxpresso, Healthmeup, MensXP, iDiva, NDTV Movies, NDTV Gadgets, NDTV Sports, Mid-day, Anandabazar Patrika’s ABP News & ABP Majha, Missmalini.com, HT Media’s Mint, Hindustan Times & Desimartini, Jagran, ESPN Cricinfo and TV9 Telugu. Magazines include India Today, Vogue India, GQ India, Cosmopolitan India and Business Today.
Google launched the Newsstand app in November last year. The app made available currents, magazines and newspapers in one place for Android devices. Google wants Newsstand to be the sole place from where users can subscribe to and read newspapers and magazines, and also have their Flipboard-like content there. Articles on Newsstand are formatted differently for easy reading and users have the option to save it for later and read it in offline mode as well.
